If you think that life on an island is all about the
pristine white beaches and crystal clear blue waters and sunny sky, then allow
me to add a bit of reality in the perfect picture made by your mind. Obviously the
#islandlife got perks. The kind of perks that makes all the “non-islanders”
envy the islanders.
But amidst the tropically coloured stories of our life, we
tend to forget to mention that part, where every morning we are rushing to work
through the traffic of Port Louis. That part, where we come back home,
exhausted with no more have energy to cook dinner. That part, where despite
being tired, we try to keep up with everything that is being thrown at us on
each and every step of life.
So yeah, islanders also, have to struggle to earn a living. We
have to get through the city life as well. I have been living in Mauritius which
I proudly call home for all my life and have absolutely no regret about it. But
the thing is everything is not as rosy-dozy as you all imagine it. I juggle
between my personal life and professional life, just like most of you do. From time to time, I try to break away from my routine life for mini
escapes to explore the various spots of Mauritius. But those times come like
once in a blue moon. It is easy to say “let go of everything and just live your
life” but bills are not going to get paid on their own, right? Life then turns
into a desperate wait, longing for new adventures.
That’s how I decided to find happiness and beauty in every
little thing I come across-from the colourful marbles displayed in my office to
the interior decorations of a pizzeria, from the rushing through the crowd at the bus-stop to
secure a seat in the bus every morning to the 1 hour lunch break spent in walking
down La Rue La Corderie, from the buying of one expensive fashion piece to the rummaging of clothes in flea
markets, from walking past the shops of Bagatelle Mall to walking past the sellers of the Vegetable Fairs, from that lazy hour of doing nothing
to that busy hour when everything is on me…and many more....
Of course, there are days you would probably find me cursing
the above mentioned activities and then there are the days where I am grateful
for being able to experience all this. It is all about the perception, the
perception of the common island girl.
